Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063

The Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy is the African Union's continental policy framework for achieving sustainable water security and safe sanitation across Africa in support of Agenda 2063. Officially launched during the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in February 2026, the Vision recognizes water as a strategic resource essential for economic transformation, food security, public health, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, regional integration, peace, and inclusive development.

The Policy provides a long-term framework for African Union Member States to strengthen integrated water resources management, improve water governance, expand access to safe drinking water and sanitation, promote climate-resilient water infrastructure, protect freshwater ecosystems, strengthen transboundary water cooperation, and mobilize sustainable financing for the water sector. It also supports sustainable agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, energy production, ecosystem restoration, disaster risk reduction, and resilient food systems.

The Vision aligns with Agenda 2063, the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 6), and broader continental priorities on climate adaptation, environmental protection, and inclusive socioeconomic development. It serves as the guiding framework for governments, regional economic communities, development partners, civil society, academia, and the private sector in advancing Africa's water security agenda.
