African Union Blue Economy Strategy
Description
The African Union Blue Economy Strategy provides the continental framework for the sustainable development and governance of Africa's blue economy. It promotes the sustainable use, conservation, restoration, and management of Africa's oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and other aquatic resources as drivers of economic growth, food security, environmental sustainability, regional integration, and improved livelihoods.
The Strategy recognizes the blue economy as a key contributor to the implementation of Agenda 2063, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and Africa's climate resilience objectives. It identifies priority sectors including fisheries and aquaculture, maritime transport and logistics, marine biotechnology, coastal and marine tourism, renewable ocean energy, marine ecosystem conservation, blue carbon ecosystems, marine spatial planning, ocean governance, maritime security, and sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources.
The Strategy encourages African Union Member States to strengthen regional cooperation, promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, conserve marine biodiversity, build climate-resilient coastal communities, enhance scientific research and innovation, develop blue skills and employment opportunities for youth and women, and mobilise public and private investment in the blue economy. It serves as the continent's overarching policy framework for unlocking Africa's aquatic resources while ensuring their long-term sustainability for future generations.
